Master Plan for the Ports of Cyprus
The project, financed by 50% by the Commission of the European Communities, in the field of trans-European networks, is made up of three studies with a total budget of €936.918.
This project will generally help Cyprus Ports Authority to implement its vision for the ports of Cyprus, which is to transform them into highly efficient, technologically advanced and competitive ports and to achieve a leading position in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea for servicing Cyprus trade, transit trade and cruise liners. The Cyprus Ports Authority is considering the possibility of undertaking substantial investments for strengthening and modernizing the Cypriot ports infrastructure.
Activity 1
Overall study for the optimisation of the use of the resources and assets of the Cyprus ports
The purpose of activity 1 is to evaluate the processes of handling ships, cargo and passengers over a period of time in order to identify bottlenecks and costly, bureaucratic and inefficient procedures as well as assets used inefficiently (i.e. below their full capacity). It will then propose solutions focusing on the use of technology to improve substitute and eliminate the time to carry out these processes and their costs. This project will assist the Cyprus Ports Authority in identifying whether its assets are used properly and to propose ways of improving them. A better usage of the assets is indeed expected to lower the costs improve the efficiency and reduce handling time for the services provided to cargo, ships and passengers, assisting the ports to become more competitive.

Activity 2
Feasibility study for the expansion of the Limassol port and quay
The purpose of activity 2 is to evaluate the capacity of Limassol port to serve Cyprus trade and transit trade as well as the capacity of the port to act as a centre for providing services for international trade, cruises and passenger movement and as a ‘gateway’ supporting EU trade and passenger movement. The result will be a feasibility study which will include projected costs and benefits from the expansion of the port.
Activity 2 will assist the Cyprus Ports Authority to assess the financial feasibility for the planned expansion and / or upgrading of the Limassol port and quay as well as to indicate possible financing solutions that would secure the viability of the proposed investments.

Activity 3
Feasibility study for assessing the possibility of handling dangerous cargo by the industrial port of Vassiliko
Activity 3 consists of a feasibility and environmental study for the possible extension of the industrial port of Vassiliko. The purpose is to find out whether the transfer of polluted, bulk hazardous and dangerous cargo from the ports of Larnaka and Limassol to Vassiliko will improve the environmental performances of the freight transport system. The cargoes described above require special handling which causes delay, potential safety hazards and the duplication of expertise, making their processing more costly. Expensive investments at Limassol and Larnaka ports would be better used for other types of cargo. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this transfer will have a positive environmental impact on the Limassol and Larnaka cities.
